History

First written information about our town comes from year 1282. From this we know that Leba was not located where it is now and people lived on top of the dunes, almost on the beach.

A big storm destroyed old Leba and the people were forced to move to the other side of the river. The village was covered by the sand dunes and disappeared forever. The only part, which exists today is the ruin of the Church of St Nicolas. It is opened to visitors and you can see it by going to Turystyczna Street, in the direction of the sea.

The new village grew and officially became a town in 1357.

In XIX century the river was regulated and, thanks to this, the harbour was built. During this time a rail track between Leba and Lebork was also built, which opened the town to tourists.

During the II World War German army established their blasting site in today’s Slovinski National Park. Today you can visit part of it and learn about German tactics and their weapons. The museum and site are opened from May until late October.

Nowadays, Leba has over 2000 inhabitants, and the number doubles up during the Summer season.
People who live here are mostly fishermen or owners of the hotels, guest houses or restaurants.
You can find almost anything you need in this town.
